"Sam" is a short film about gender identity and LGBTQ bullying written and directed by Sal Bardo. Synopsis: After being bullied at school for dressing as a boy, Sam escapes into the fields surrounding her house, where she's forced to choose between who she is and who society thinks she should be. Sal Bardo is an award-winning writer-director whose movies and music videos often tackle issues affecting the gay and LGBT communities and have screened at film festivals around the world. I prefer to let viewers interpret my work in their own way. Maybe Sam is transgender, maybe she is a lesbian who likes to wear more masculine clothing, maybe she's just a tomboy. The point remains the same: Sam should be who she (or he, as the case may be) wants to be. Even if Sam does identity as a boy in the end, referring to the character as such in the synopsis could potentially be confusing for those who aren't familiar with the terminology, which isn't always black and white, even for allies of the LGBT community. We are ALL learning and I hope the film continues to generate awareness and discussion!
