Yes, the nominations for the Academy Awards will be announced 5am PST on Tuesday. Fans of this site wonder if I’ve made my predictions already? The answer is yes. It's a tradition here! Here are my predictions for this year’s Academy Award nominees.

Once again, I make my picks for who I think will be nominated, the dark horses for upsetting, plus maybe a for-your-consideration pick for one without a chance, but deserves it.

    BEST PICTURE
    Call Me By Your Name
    Darkest Hour
    Dunkirk
    Get Out
    I, Tonya
    Lady Bird
    The Post
    The Shape Of Water
    Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
    Wonder Woman

    DH1: The Big Sick
    DH2: The Florida Project
    FYC: Phantom Thread

I don’t think there will be ten nominees for Best Picture. I think ten will be the maximum. However I predicted the ten most likely to get nominated.

    BEST DIRECTOR
GUILLERMO DEL TORO/The Shape Of Water
    GRETA GERWIG/Lady Bird
MARTIN McDONAGH/Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
    CHRISTOPHER NOLAN/Dunkirk
    JORDAN PEELE/Get Out

DH1: LUCA GUADAGNINO/Call Me By Your Name
    DH2: STEVEN SPIELBERG/The Post
    FYC: DENIS VILLENEUVE/Blade Runner 2049

    BEST ACTOR
TIMOTHEE CHALAMET/Call Me By Your Name
    DANIEL DAY-LEWIS/Phantom Thread
    JAMES FRANCO/The Disaster Artist
    DANIEL KALUUYA/Get Out
    GARY OLDMAN/Darkest Hour

    DH1: TOM HANKS/The Post
    DH2: DNEZEL WASHINGTON/ Romeo J. Israel Esq.
    FYC: HARRY DEAN STANTON/Lucky

To think back when I first came to this site, back in the fall of 2000 (Yes, I’m that old!), we all anticipated Tom Hanks would be the first actor to win Best Actor three times. It eventually became Daniel Day-Lewis. Hard to believe Tom’s last nomination happened around that time, for Cast Away. Maybe he can do it again.

NOTE: Some of you may be wondering why I picked James Franco after the recent allegations. The allegations first surfaced in the media on January 11th. Voting for nominations closed January 12th. I don’t think it will hurt Franco’s chances.

    BEST ACTRESS
    SALLY HAWKINS/The Shape Of Water
FRANCES McDORMAND/Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
    MARGOT ROBBIE/I, Tonya
    SAOIRSE RONAN/Lady Bird
    MERYL STREEP/The Post

    DH1: JESSICA CHASTAIN/Molly’s Game
    DH2: JUDI DENCH/Victoria And Abdul
FYC: EMMA STONE/Battle Of The Sexes

Usually the Best Actress category is subject to whether it was a strong year for leading female roles or a weak year for leading females. You’ll know it when you see the list. This was one year where there were a lot of strong leading actress performances.

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
    WILLEM DAFOE/The Florida Project
WOODY HARRELSON/Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
    RICHARD JENKINS/The Shape Of Water
CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER/All The Money In The World
SAM ROCKWELL/Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

DH1: ARMIE HAMMER/Call Me By Your Name
DH2: STEVE CARRELL/Battle Of The Sexes
    FYC: PATRICK STEWART/Logan

Admit it. We all would like to see one or two Oscar nominations for popcorn movies in the bigger categories instead of all their Oscar acclaim being relegated to the technical categories.

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
    MARY J. BLIGE/Mudbound
    HOLLY HUNTER/The Big Sick
    ALLISON JANNEY/I, Tonya
    LAURIE METCALF/Lady Bird
    OCTAVIA SPENCER/The Shape Of Water

    DH1: HONG CHAU/Downsizing
    DH2: TIFFANY HADDISH/Girl Trip

Those who know the Oscar race will know this is the hardest category to predict. The most certain of certains may not make the cut in favor of one from nowhere.

    BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
EMILY GORDON & KUMAIL NANJIANI/The Big Sick
    JORDAN PEELE/Get Out
    GRETA GERWIG/Lady Bird
GUILLERMO DEL TORO & VANESSA TAYLOR/The Shape Of Water
MARTIN McDONAGH/Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

    DH1: STEVEN ROGERS/I, Tonya
    DH2: LIZ HANNAH & JOSH SINGER/The Post
    FYC: CHRISTOPHER NOLAN/Dunkirk

One year, it’s adapted screenplays that have the most muscle come Oscar time. Another year, it’s the original screenplays. This year is the muscle of the original screenplays.

    BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
JAMES IVORY/Call Me By Your Name
SCOTT NEUSTADTER & MICHAEL WEBER/The Disaster Artist
    AARON SORKIN/Molly’s Game
    DEE REES & VIRGIL WILLIAMS/Mudbound
JASON FUCHS & ALAN HEINBERG/Wonder Woman

DH1: JACK THORNE, STEVE CONRAD & STEPHEN CHBODSKY/Wonder
DH2: SCOTT FRANK, JAMES MANGOLD & MICHAEL GREEN/Logan

    BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
    The Breadwinner
    Coco
    Ferdinand
    Loving Vincent
    Napping Princess

    DH1: Boss Baby
    DH2: Despicable Me 3

2016 was a stellar year for animated movies. 2017 was pretty lackluster. Hey, any year where Boss Baby has a chance of getting nominated here has to be a dud year. And don’t even get me started on the mere existence of The Emoji Movie! Coco and Ferdinand were definitely the top wide-release fare of the year, but I think the rest of the berths will go to independent features.

    BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
    ROGER DEAKINS/Blade Runner 2049
    BRUNO DELBONNEL/Darkest Hour
    DAN LAUTSEN/The Shape Of Water
SAYONBHU MUKDEPROM/Call Me By Your Name
    HOYTE VAN HOYTEMA/Dunkirk

    DH: RACHEL MORRISON/Mudbound

    BEST COSTUME DESIGN
    RENEE APRIL/ Blade Runner 2049
    MARK BRIDGES/Phantom Thread
    JACQUELINE DURRAN/Beauty And The Beast
    LINDY HEMMING/Wonder Woman
    LUIS SEQUEIRA/The Shape Of Water

    DH: JENNIFER JOHNSON/I, Tonya

    BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
    Chasing Coral
    City Of Ghosts
    Ex Libris
    Faces Places
    Jane

    BEST FILM EDITING
JON GREGORY/Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
PAUL MACHLISS & JONATHAN AMOS/Baby Driver
    LEE SMITH/Dunkirk
    JOE WALKER/Blade Runner 2049
    SIDNEY WOLINSKY/The Shape Of Water

DH1: WALTER FASANO/Call Me By Your Name
    DH2: GREGORY PLOTKIN/Get Out

    BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
    A Fantastic Woman (Chile)
    Foxtrot (Israel)
    In The Fade (Germany)
    Loveless (Russia)
    The Square (Sweden)

DH1: On Body And Soul (Hungary)
    DH2: Felicite (Senegal)

    BEST HAIR AND MAKEUP
    Darkest Hour
    I, Tonya
    Wonder

    DH1: Beauty And The Beast
    DH2: The Shape Of Water

    BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
    ALEXANDRE DESPLAT/The Shape Of Water
    JOHNNY GREENWOOD/Phantom Thread
    RUPERT GREGSON-WILLIAMS/Wonder Woman
    JOHN WILLIAMS/The Post
    HANS ZIMMER/Dunkirk

DH1: CARTER BURWELL/Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
    DH2: BENJAMIN WALFISCH & HANS ZIMMER/Blade Runner 2049

Let’s face it. A nomination for John Williams in this category is a foregone conclusion.

    BEST ORIGINAL SONG
“Evermore” – Beauty And The Beast
    “Mighty River” - Mudbound
“Mystery Of Love” – Call Me By Your Name
    “Remember Me” – Coco
“This Is Me” – The Greatest Showman

    DH1: “Home” – Ferdinand
    DH2: “Mighty River” – Mudbound

    BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
    Beauty And The Beast
    Blade Runner 2049
    Dunkirk
    Phantom Thread
    The Shape Of Water

DH1: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
DH2: Murder On The Orient Express

    BEST SOUND MIXING
    Baby Driver
    Blade Runner 2049
    Dunkirk
    Star Wars: The Last Jedi
    Wonder Woman

    DH1: The Shape Of Water
    DH2: Coco

    BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
    Blade Runner 2049
    Dunkirk
    Star Wars: The Last Jedi
War For The Planet Of The Apes
    Wonder Woman

    DH1: Kong: Skull Island
    DH2: Thor: Ragnarok
    FYC: It

I hate to break it to It fans, but this looks to be It’s best chances for a nomination.

And there you have it. My predictions for the 2017 Academy Award nominations. You may be crazy enough like me to wake up bright and early to see them live, or you’ll save your excitement until you wake up normally. However don’t be surprised by the surprises Tuesday morning!

A tradition for how long now Trev, 15 years plus? look forward to your winner picks.

Us originals have been around a timer, a few days ago even JP dropped in, those were great days back on that Delphi board wit the likes of the maniacal Star Girly and Justinbluvr, I LOL when I think of those days at times, who can forget Stargirly and Eoin's battles. lol

Yes, I still remember those days. Back when I had all my hair and I was either in high school or college. What's kept me over here has been the fans of my writing over the years. Also still keeping in contact with old-timers like Doc, Jeffrey007 and you keep me coming back. In fact I often feel my Top 10 film lists or prediction lists lack validity until I get your word for it.

It's interesting how on two of my prediction posts, there's the big debate: Coco or Ferdinand! Not complaining. Just surprised.
I have to say Ferdinand was funnier, but Coco was more magical. I usually like that when an animated movie takes you to another world. That probably explains why I prefered Kubo over Zootopia last year.

Yet according to the voting here there is no way Ferdinand is twice as good as Coco, well I guess it just means it has lots of fans here.

Thank you. Always glad to hear what you have to say. But I'm too lazy to predict the BAFTAs for you.
